And Bull, I usually liked home made kimchi when I was in Hawaii. Cabbage, was OK, but I liked scallion better. I would love to try radish!

My dad speaks Chinese- he majored in East Asian Studies at KU in the 70's and taught English in Taiwan for awhile. When we take him to Chinese places, and he starts talking to them, the wait staff/owners are always really amused by the white guy talking to them, and immediately bring the "secret" menu. It happens here, where my dad lives in Oklahoma, any place there is Chinese food.

Though for the record- there are lots of places where the "regular" menu features pork and tofu dishes- that's really not that unusual.

I am really excited to try this place now- next time I leave downtown for the 'burbs. YUM YUM

I always wondered about the lack of authentic Chinese cuisine in the US (at least in cities without a Chinatown). Now I know. Thanks for the tip.

I'll be sure to ask for the Chinese menu next time, because Sysco General Tso's chicken can't hold a candle to real-deal Chinese food...

The sad thing is most gwai-los don't even realize that egg rolls and fortune cookies are not real Chinese food, but instead some bastardization designed to appeal to our barbarian palate.

Bull, I've been wary for the very same reasons, so I guess my fears weren't entirely unwarranted. The Chinese menu at Lucky Wok has very good English translations, however, and the server didn't mind me ordering from it in the slightest.

THANK YOU for posting this! I've heard The Rumor of the Chinese Menu for years, but I've always been too chicken to ask. So I've eaten at quite a few "bad" Chinese restaurants (which were maybe not that bad!).

My fav Chinese restaurant is Pine & Bamboo Garden (SMP & Nieman). Their "menu" food is great, I'll be their real Chinese food is rockin'.

One question...did the Chinese menu have English translation? Or do you read Chinese?

I've known of this phenomenon for 15 years. But, when I've been interested enough to order the Chinese or, in my case, Korean menu, I've been confronted with 2 things. 1. The server either denies such a thing exists or is rude about it and tries to say that I don't want that. or 2. The menu is in Korean script. Either way it is not worth my effort.

When it was worth my effort was when I knew of an item on the Korean menu that I knew they had and that I loved (radish kimchi). I will argue with an old Korean lady if it means I can get some radish kimchi.

It's nice to know of someplace in the metro where I don't have to fight to get the alternate menu.
